The Town of LuzerneDuring it's existence, the town has had three names. It was first known as Hartseph Hollow, named for Zachariah Hartseph, a pioneer, who first settled here about 1790. In May, 1866, the name was changed to Mill Hollow, because of the four mills operating on waterpower from Toby's Creek. The present name, Luzerne, was adopted September 23, 1882, when it became an organized borough. There was much discussion about the naming of the town when Mill Hollow was discontinued. The Bennett family and the Raub family favored Bennettville and Raubville respectively, however, both names already existed in the state. It was during this hot discussion that someone, anxious to leave the meeting, suggested to call it Luzerne after the county. Currently, Luzerne houses of many unique and growing small businesses. You can find a great alternative to the large corporate banks in Luzerne National Bank. Luzerne is the home of several well known bars and restaurants besides Mill Hollow Cafe. Our neighbor, the House of Nutrition, is the valley[area]'s largest natural foods grocery store. In addition to internal health care, there are salons and spas, fitness centers, and variety of hip little consignment shops for your clothing needs. |
